Leather American History Books, Civil War Books, War of the Rebellion Collection, S/10
An antique collection of 10-volumes from War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies, Series 1, 1884 to 1886.
These Official Records as they are commonly called are considered the best American civil war books, the entire series was prepared under the direction of the Secretary of War and edited by Robert N. Scott in response to a June 1880 Act of Congress requiring a full account of the Civil War from both sides.
The books are three-quarter leather-bound over marbleized paper covers with matching end pages. The entire book block has marbleized edges although the top and side have faded with age. The bottom of the page stack however is still quite vibrant. Some of the leather on the spines are chipped, splitting, and fragile as can be seen in the pictures.
These books measure 25" across, 9.75" tall, and 6.75" front to back. All books are from Series 1 and include Volume 11 -part 2 and 3, volume 12 - part 1, 2, and 3, volume 13, volume 14, volume 15, and volume 16 - part 1 and 2.
We do not know the original owner of the collection but there are library cards, unused for the most part, in the front or back of some of the books and catalog numbers on the spine bottoms.
There are many more of these in the series that will be put up over the next few days. Please let us know if you would like to see more before they are listed. We would be happy to give you a first look.
As these books are quite old please expect that they show a bit of age-related wear.
